Continental Societies, Inc., a public service organization,
dedicated to the socio-economic and cultural
welfare of underprivileged children and youth, was organized
in 1956 and incorporated nationally in
1972. The Richmond Chapter was organized in 1976. It embraces
42 Chapters in 20 states, the District
of Columbia and Bermuda with a total membership of
approximately 900. Through programs that
are educational, cultural, and recreational, Continental women
volunteer all over the world adhering to
the humanitarian precept of sharing with those in need.
Programs include a sweater project for needy school children,
camperships for inner city youngsters,
funds
to meet clothing and book needs for college-bound youth,
scholarships, cultural ventures, etc.
Continentals volunteer their time to work in youth centers,
pediatric wards in hospitals, homes
for delinquent youth as well as homes for persons who are
mentally challenged and emotionally
disturbed youth.
Programs and projects are financed by benefits given annually
on a Chapter level. All funds raised on
the local level are spent in the local community with the
exception of Chapter contributions to
national projects as agreed upon by the Societies. A report
from each Chapter of funds raised and
distributed is given at the Annual Conclave. At Conclave, each
Chapter also gives a fixed amount toward
a combined contribution to a national humanitarian project. Funds for
operations on the National level
are secured through Chapter dues, assessments and National
fund-raising projects.
